Reading recent headlines about those who feel shaken, confused, and fearful because of job layoffs reminds me of a time when my then-fiancé was laid off from his job. Because we were planning to get married in a few months, there were many questions swirling in our heads. Our plans were in a state of upheaval.
We were struggling to get our bearings when a friend warmly encouraged us, “Instead of worrying about what’s going to change, think instead about what’s not going to change.” This oriented our thoughts in a new and helpful direction.
We wrote down the fundamental facts of our being that would never change. We each committed to praying with these spiritual facts by letting them fill consciousness, negating panic or waves of fear. And we broadened our prayers to include my fiancé’s colleagues, who also felt their world was being turned upside down. Here is a shortened version of our list:
God will still be God – All-in-all. This is foundational. God is wholly good as well as all-power, all-presence, all-consciousness, and all-action. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, helps us to understand the nature of God, Love, Spirit, as totality itself. She writes in “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” “Spirit is the life, substance, and continuity of all things” (p. 124).
All being – including yours and mine – is the result of the one infinite, all-knowing divine Mind expressing itself. God, Principle, is constantly governing His universe in perfect harmony and order. In reality, nothing can displace or upend this.
God’s limitless abundance is always present and available. God, the infinite provider, is the only source of good. Jesus repeatedly proved the reliability of unlimited and ever-available Love, able and willing to meet every need. When he needed, for instance, a boat, a donkey, fish for breakfast, or a room to gather with his disciples for a meal, these needs were beautifully supplied.
It was the eternal Christ, the true idea of God, showing us the truth about our sonship and daughterhood with God, that Jesus so clearly understood and lived. This same Christ, Truth, is with us today to awaken us to the tangible good that is present here and now.
As a child, or expression, of God, we each have an inseparable relationship with our divine Father-Mother, who loves us infinitely and eternally. Our unique contribution will never be expendable or replaceable. Our worth and purpose will never be devalued. God will always be the sole source of each one’s invariable, operable, ceaseless good. All good is sustained and maintained by omnipresent Love.
In the Bible’s book of James, we have this promise of consistent goodness: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (1:17).
We are not independent mortals who have to – or even can – create good for ourselves or others. Because we exist as the expression of God, Spirit, we are spiritual and immortal and have an inseverable relationship with Love. As God’s adored offspring, we actually include all the good that God gives. In truth, it is impossible to be cut off from Love’s ever-present provision.
God’s laws are ceaselessly operating to bless and sustain us, supporting the unfoldment of good. Intelligent Love is inspiring, directing next steps, and opening doors. There are no limitations to the good that God is bestowing on us. There are no obstacles that can keep us from being where we need to be, doing what is uniquely ours to do.
God’s law of progress is a law to every dimension of our lives. Resentment and fear can be released as we understand that this remarkable law is perpetually advancing our lives.
When we let these spiritual facts and laws of God ground and govern us, impatience, anxiety, and resentment fade. And this is exactly what happened to my fiancé and me.
Two weeks before the wedding, my fiancé was offered a job that was the perfect next career step for him. We were also grateful to hear that every laid-off employee in his former office found an excellent job.
Whether concerned about our own situation or changes affecting loved ones or others in our communities, our countries, or the world, we can pray and let our hearts be comforted by finding security in the spiritual facts that are never going to change.
