There I am, upright on my
what-it-takes own two feet
– a stand-alone self, thinking
I hold the reins, carry the load.
Then something out of left
field tilts me off balance again;
the grate of too hard, too
big to heal – can’t take
one more thing.
This sudden pitch verging on
a mental topple, I struggle to
stand steady again; to regain
my tied-up-nicely, self-sufficient
package now unraveling,
contents scattering.
But as my prayer probes for
new footing, for spiritual
substance that won’t go to
pieces, falling turns into a
leaning I can’t resist: on God
– the “sustaining infinite.”*
Here, upheld by God –
by unending Love, comforting;
by measureless Spirit, providing;
by limitless Soul, harmonizing;
by boundless Life, renewing –
we lean, resting – His spiritual
offspring in burdenless trust.
* “To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings.”
